Reunions…

I don’t usually look forward to weekends, in all honesty. Usually because I work all weekend. But this weekend I have off. So one would think to themselves “She must be excited to have a weekend off!”  Ohhhh.. but she isn’t. She has this weekend off because off 3 family reunions.

It starts on Saturday. I’ll be pulled out of bed to go to the Schwartz reunion at 12. This one’s okay… well the food is anyways. Actually it’s delicious. After lunch there’s “mingling time”. No one says that it’s mingling time.. but every one knows that it is. This leaves open time slots for awkwardness such as some old lady with a golden cat broach coming up to you saying “Hello Chantel! My have you grown…what grade are you in now?”

You smile… and answer her question. You never quite know how to respond to the “my have you grown” part. Do you say thanks? .. I generally just ignore the comment completely. Then you think to yourself “I wonder who that was anyway.. she at least looks familiar so I can note that she probably is not a threat or any recorded child predator”  (But who knows at these family reunions)

After dinner we have a gift exchange where you pull a number. Every little once in a while, someone will take your gift and you have an opportunity to steal as well. This may sound fun, but the extent of the gifts is usually men’s dress socks, Werther’s, tim hortons gift cards, and peanuts. All things that 60 year old men love.

You take home some crap that you would never have wanted.. and re-gift it next year/bring it to the reunion and re-wrap it.

Once it’s around supper time you go home. About time.

Sunday morning… I get ready for the next knock-out reunion. The WAGLER dinner in TAVISTOCK. Does it sound big? First of all, there’s about 12389710238971073567625 Waglers in our area, and Tavistock is about 99% of my relatives.

It’s also strange how about 99% of them are also overweight at this reunion… so when they tell the table numbers to get up and get food you always hope you’re one of the first. Not so that you don’t have to wait, but so that you actually get food other than jello and scalloped potatos.

This is an all day thing. And this year, it’s my family’s turn to plan the reunion…. meaning I have to be there from 11-9 .

Most likely my favourite day of life……….  I love Christmas…
